The town is located in the narrow ravine of Gregory Gulch, a side ravine of Clear Creek. In 1859 the discovery of gold in Gregory Gulch by its namesake, John H. Gregory, sent thousands of prospectors and miners into the ravine looking for lodes in the hillsides. The Colorado Central Railroad extended its line to the town in the early 1870s. A restored depot and locomotive are on display on the east side of downtown. Many of the historic buildings in the town have been restored following the opening of the first casino in 1991. The casinos are largely located down the ravine from the historic townsite, lining the side of Colorado State Highway 119. Many of the current casino visitors arrive on bus tours from nearby Denver.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
