Edgewater is a city located in Jefferson County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,445.
The City of Edgewater, Colorado, is located at the extreme eastern boundary of Jefferson County on the west side of metropolitan Denver just west of Sloan Lake. It is surrounded by the communities of Denver on the east, Lakewood on the west and south, and Wheat Ridge on the north.
Because of its location it affords a spectacular view of the Denver skyline, which is just a ten minute drive away, and residents have easy access to I-25, I-70, and 6th Avenue. This makes Edgewater an ideal place for those wishing to avail themselves of recreational opportunities in the Rocky Mountains or the various commercial, retail and cultural centers in the vicinity.
Edgewater is a small community, approximately one square mile, with a population just over 5000. While it has the conveniences of the nearby big city, it has a small town feeling and atmosphere built on a 100 year heritage. The community is based on traditional neighborhoods with stately trees, parks, friendliness, and a sense of security: a real home town for people, young and old.
Edgewater has a mixture of single and multi family homes and there are several large apartment complexes. There are two elementary schools, one high school, and three churches located in the community.
The commercial areas provide both the community and a larger area around the City with market services.

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,445 people, 2,331 households, and 1,314 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,961.0/km² (7,630.4/mi²). There are 2,424 housing units at an average density of 1,318.2/km² (3,396.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 74.88% White, 1.47% African American, 1.56% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 16.18% from other races, and 4.37% from two or more races. 35.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,331 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.6% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.6% are non-families. 34.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,023, and the median income for a family is $40,426. Males have a median income of $30,347 versus $25,735 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,166. 10.2% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 12.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
