Fort Lupton is located at 40°5'6" North, 104°48'11" West (40.084918, -104.802996)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.
Fort Lupton, situated in southern Weld County, is named for Lieutenant Lancaster Lupton, who originally came to the area with Colonel Dodge’s Dragoons in 1835. Seeing the possibilities for trade, Lt. Lupton built a trading fort in 1836. His business, as well as a farm thrived, but after a blizzard in 1844 decimated wildlife and trade, Lt. Lupton agreed to abandon his trading fort and began working for one of his competitors. Eventually he found his way to California where he started a mercantile business in Stockton, and later tried his hand at gold mining and orchard farming. Lt. Lupton died in California never returning to Colorado or his trading post.
In 1859, two enterprising businessmen saw possibilities in the strategic location and settled the Fort for a second time. Again, trading was lucrative as more and more people traveled west to try their hand at gold mining or failing that, ranching. Incorporation didn’t occur until 1889 because of the high cost of farm produce in comparison to other sideline occupations. Following the completion of the railroad in 1879, some of the fort's settlers began to talk about becoming a real town. The greatest drawback seemed to be an adequate number of people required for such a small space to comply with state incorporation laws. Incorporation came to pass in December of that year, followed by an impressive growth rate. Laws, taxes, businesses, churches, a school and organizations also came in rapid succession.
In the early 1900's, the Industrial Revolution promulgated an overall movement away from a strictly agricultural-based economy, and a brickyard, condensed milk plant, cannery, and sugar factory paved the way for a more diverse mix of businesses and industry. Fort Lupton became an official Colorado city following the election in April 1974, and today, a truss manufacturer, a tomato greenhouse and an oil engineering & construction company are among the city's largest employers. With a new recreation center, and a state-of-the-art water treatment plant that offering reliable water for many years to come, the city, once again, stands at the crossroads of progress. Just 25 miles north of Denver; 25 miles east of Boulder and 25 miles south of Greeley, with ready access to E-470, I-25, I-76, Denver International Airport and the Rocky Mountains, Fort Lupton with its small city atmosphere, progressive facilities and available sites continues to provide an attractive ideal location for business, small industry and families alike.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,787 people, 2,099 households, and 1,677 families residing in the city. The population density is 658.4/km² (1,707.2/mi²). There are 2,132 housing units at an average density of 206.8/km² (536.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.34% White, 0.43% African American, 1.36% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 22.65% from other races, and 4.38% from two or more races. 47.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,099 households out of which 48.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.23 and the average family size is 3.62.
In the city the population is spread out with 34.4% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 103.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $40,917, and the median income for a family is $45,348. Males have a median income of $34,368 versus $23,849 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,649. 13.3% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 17.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
