Lyons is a town located in Boulder County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,585.
Lyons is located at the entrance to both the North and South St. Vrain Rivers, only twenty miles east of Rocky Mountain National Park. Beautiful red cliffs border the town, which features enough amenities to be comfortable but still enjoys a traditional small-town atmosphere.
Lyons has mild climate. It is cool in the summer and fairly warm in the winter since it is located in a bowl surrounded by sandstone. There's rarely a day without at least a few rays of sunshine!
Lyons' has small-town charm and a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. People may assume Lyons is the place you drive through on your way to Estes Park, but it is chock full of things to do and places to see. Some of the best mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing can be found right outside of town. The confluence of the North and South St. Vrain Creeks is in Lyons, creating the St. Vrain River. Paddle the Lyons Whitewater Park or hop on a tube and float the river. Whatever you choose the river is a great way to cool off on a hot summers day! As of the census of 2000, there are 1,585 people, 672 households, and 436 families residing in the town. The population density is 493.5/km² (1,273.5/mi²). There are 686 housing units at an average density of 213.6/km² (551.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.49% White, 0.38% African American, 0.88% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.23% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 8.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 672 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.85.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 36.3% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $50,764, and the median income for a family is $58,750. Males have a median income of $45,417 versus $29,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,276. 8.3% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
